As Megan strained her pythons to carry one of the boxes of 30 into the house, she muttered, "this is a heavy record Ryan." Double gatefold, double vinyl(4 sides) we didn't even opt for the heavier 180 gram option, but each single record is twice the weight of most of my 60's, 70's and 80s records. We listened at our friends G+M's place first and it seemed to sound better than the test pressing. Which was a relief... There is no safety net when you produce and mix your own record and then actually master it yourself. Although I master CDs professionally, I mastered this one for vinyl as well! I'd gained confidence by mastering the Manvils record for vinyl, the manufacturer had said it was in the top 2% of sound quality!!! Vinyl can be tricky, too much bass on one side can throw the needle around and make it skip. Remarkably ours turned out awesome, definitely better than the cd, depending on the system, remember them portable Mickey Mouse turntables?
So the added bonus of the vinyl vs. the cd, is that there is an extra song, or should I say 'track.' It's called 11:11 and it clocks in at, you guessed it, 11 minutes and 11 seconds. It's a composition by Steven Shearer, Megan Bradfield and myself. It consists of predominantly music/noise/rumbles/creeks that Steven had made for his sculpture that we are climbing on the cover. Overlapped with ambient bits of noise/strings/trumpets/miscellaneous background fodder from the record. Somewhere in-between 'music for airports' and Gyorgy Ligeti. We've also included the lyrics on the in-slips of the vinyl. There is also a huge mesmerizing photo by Chris Gergley inside the gatefold of another Steven Shearer's sculpture. Oh, and we've also included a download drop card so that you can enjoy it on your iPizzle while holding the superior 12" packaging... hmm did I word that right?
